The Graduate Program in Environmental Sciences (PPGCIAMB) aims to train highly qualified professionals in Environmental Sciences with an in-depth understanding of educational, natural, management, and production systems. These professionals should be capable of conducting innovative and interdisciplinary research, as well as developing sustainable strategies across various sectors, integrating responsible environmental practices within corporate, governmental, and societal contexts.

The program's vision is further aligned with UFAL’s institutional mission to become a local, regional, and international reference in education, research, and outreach, conducted in an ethical, inclusive, transparent, democratic, and socially engaged manner, aiming to positively impact societal realities (PDI 2019–2023).

Objectives
To conduct research on the relationship between nature and society, focusing on educational, natural, management, and production systems, with the goal of intervening and solving environmental problems in the Lower São Francisco River and its estuary, the Southern Coastal Region, and the Agreste of Alagoas.
To promote the training of researchers with a distinctly interdisciplinary and innovative profile, contributing to studies on educational, natural, management, and production systems aimed at sustainable regional development.
To prepare graduates for academic careers, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary education.
To generate scientific and technological knowledge that values the sociobiodiversity of marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems, fostering sustainability in the Lower São Francisco region and its estuary, the Southern Coast, and the Agreste of Alagoas.
To identify environmental impacts resulting from extractive activities and productive systems such as fishing, exotic species aquaculture, hydropower plants, mining, agricultural monocultures, and tourism, in order to propose prevention, mitigation, and sociobiodiversity conservation strategies.
To develop management and production processes and methods that integrate nature and society in an interdisciplinary and sustainable manner.
To promote sustainability in the Lower São Francisco region and its estuary, the Southern Coast, and the Agreste of Alagoas through educational initiatives, valuation of sociobiodiversity, environmental impact assessments, and the improvement of management and production methods.
To engage with public and private sectors to enhance the program’s capacity to intervene in natural and social systems.
To establish systematic integration and cooperation with other academic programs, organizations, and researchers, in order to conduct comparative studies between the biogeophysical space of the Lower São Francisco River and its estuary, the Southern Coast, and the Agreste of Alagoas, and those of other regions.
To disseminate knowledge generated in the biogeophysical space of the Lower São Francisco River and its estuary, the Southern Coast, and the Agreste of Alagoas, so that it may be applied in other regions to improve environmental and societal conditions.
