SUMMARY:

This dissertation proposes a comparative study of Angústia (1936), by Graciliano Ramos, and Ninho de Cobras (1973), by Lêdo Ivo, with the aim of understanding how these novels represent the contradictions of Brazilian modernity through types of prose, character construction, and the representation of social classes. The analysis focuses on Luís da Silva and Julião Tavares in Ramos’s novel, and on Alexandre Viana and Serafim Gonçalves in Ivo’s work, investigating how different social positions produce distinct forms of subjectivity. The first part takes asits starting point Mário de Andrade’s provocation abour the recurrence of the figure of the “fracassado” in Brazilian novels of the 1930s and articulates it with novel theory, philosophy of language, and reflections on the relationship between aesthetics and ideology. It argues that prose, as a modernity’s privilegie forme, not only organizes narrative but also expresses a particular understanding of the world and of the possibilities for action available to the subjects inhabiting it. The second part develops an analysis of the characters through an articulation of Marxian ontology, philosophy of language, affect theory, and literary criticism. Within this framework, the dissertation proposes the concept of the dialética da infelicidade, understood as the process by which material conditions marked by exploitation, precariousness, and helplessness produce subjectivities traversed by impotent affects that tend to reproduce the very conditions that generated them. Finally, it is argued that Angústia and Ninho de Cobras make it possible to formulate a poética do fracassado, understood as the aestheticization of a historical and subjective condition in which the possibilities for action are reduced by the contradictions of Modernity. From this perspective, failure does not appear as an individual moral flaw, but as an expression of the tension between desire and impotence, hope and impossibility, revealing the gap between the promises of emancipation offered by bourgeois society and the concrete conditions of existence experienced by most subjects. Literature thus emerges as a privileged space for understanding the relationships between aesthetic form, affects, subjectivity, and history.
