Hydroethanolic Extracts of Jabuticaba (Plinia caulifora) Peel and Seed and their Bioactive Potential in Mitigating Diabetes Mellitus and Its Complications
Glycation; Jabuticaba; Glycated Hemoglobin
Glycation, a non-enzymatic reaction between sugars and free amino groups of biomolecules, has been associated with diabetes mellitus (DM) and its complications. Therefore, the search for therapeutic strategies remains a necessary area of study, especially based on natural products, since aminoguanidine and metformin have undesirable adverse effects. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the antiglycation activity of jabuticaba (Plinia cauliflora) peel and seed extracts on hemoglobin (Hb) glycation. Preliminary results reveal that the seed extract has a greater ability to inhibit Hb glycation than the peel.
