SUMMARY:

The species Euphorbia hyssopifolia L. belongs to the genus Euphorbia and the family Euphorbiaceae, and it occurs in pasture areas, roadsides, and sugarcane fields. Consequently, it can interfere with agricultural production and needs to be managed accordingly. The mechanism of action of herbicides is based on a series of events triggered by the initial action of the herbicide, which eliminates the weed. Understanding how herbicides work helps determine their usage, identifying flaws in their action and their connection to injury manifestations. These chemical defenses operate within the metabolic pathways of plants, and their mode of action is associated with the primary area of the herbicide's effect. Chemical control using herbicides is the most commonly employed tool in various crops. However, information regarding the susceptibility of all species in a given area might not be available. The key to addressing this issue lies in constructing dose-response curves using herbicides commonly registered for specific crops. Thus, the aim of this study is to construct doseresponse curves using herbicides widely used in sugarcane cultivation, specifically those belonging to the mechanisms of ALS inhibitors (Acetolactate Synthase Enzyme), carotenoid biosynthesis inhibitors, Photosystem II (PS II) inhibitors, cellulose biosynthesis inhibitors, and Protoporphyrinogen Oxidase inhibitors, for E. hyssopifolia. The experiments were conducted in the greenhouse of the Engineering and Agricultural Sciences Campus of the Federal University of Alagoas, with the application of the following herbicides, in pre-emergence, diclosulam, imazapic, metsulfuronmethyl, clomazone, isoxaflutole, indaziflam, hexazinone, tebuthiuron, amicarbazone, flumioxazin, oxifluorfen, and sulfentrazone, at increasing doses: 0, 12.5, 25, 50, 100, 200, and 400% of the recommended dose for sugarcane cultivation. Seeds were sowed in 500 ml capacity cups, followed by the application of herbicide treatments in pre-emergence. These treatments were practiced using a CO2-powered backpack sprayer equipped with bars containing two flat fan Adia 110 spray nozzles, maintaining a constant pressure of 200 KPa to achieve a spray volume of 120 L.ha-1. Visual evaluation of control was conducted, with 0% representing total absence of symptoms and 100% representing plant death. At the end of the experiments, plant samples were collected for aboveground dry mass determination. Diclosulam, imazapic, metsulfuronmethyl, clomazone, indaziflam, flumioxazin, and oxifluorfen herbicides effectively controlled E. hyssopifolia from their lowest doeses, achieving more than 50% of control of the desired population, with an exception for hexazinone, wich didn’t reach the 50% satisfactory lethality control required at doses of 12,5 and 50%. However, the remaining herbicides isoxaflutole, tebuthiuron, amicarbazone, and sulfentrazone did not provide effective control of E. hyssopifolia, failing to achieve lethal rates.
