The Bromeliaceae family includes monocotyledons of great ecological and economic relevance for New World countries. Within the bromeliads, pineapple (Ananas comoosus) receives great attention due to its high nutritional value, attractive aroma and high productivity, facts that give the fruit great economic relevance. In Brazil, the states of Pará and Paraíba concentrate most of the production. The crop is susceptible to several phytosanitary problems, including the occurrence of phytoviruses such as viruses of the Badnavirus genus. Despite the proven occurrence of two viral species, Badnavirus alphananas (pinneaple bacilliform CO virus, PBCOV) and Badnavirus betananas (pinneaple bacilliform ER virus, PBERV), belonging to the genus Badnavirus in pineapple crops, there are no data in the literature that investigate the occurrence of these phytoviruses in other members of the Bromeliaceae family. Studies on the genetic diversity and variability of badnaviruses occurring in bromeliads are rare, a factor that corroborates the hypothesis that badnavirus species occurring in Brazil are underestimated. Therefore, the present work aims to determine the genetic structure of badnaviruses occurring in bromeliads in northeastern Brazil, as well as to sequence the complete genome and determine the phylogenetic relationship of the identified viral species.
