Crown rot is one of the main post-harvest diseases in bananas worldwide,
affecting marketing and leading to huge economic losses. A complex of pathogens has
been reported as a causal agent of banana crown rot, which can settle during the transport
and commercialization phases of the fruits, causing serious damages in
commercialization. Nigrospora isolates were obtained from bananas with symptoms of
crown rot in Brazil and the genus was the second most frequently isolated and with similar
aggressiveness to Colletotrichum and Fusarium. Thus, the present work aims to identify
the Nigrospora species associated with crown rot in bananas collected in processing units
in Cariri-Ceará, through morphological, genetic and pathogenic characteristics. The 16
isolates were identified as N. hainensis and N. lacticolonia based on the analysis of the
ITS region and the TUB2 and EF1-α genes, this being the first report of these species
causing postharvest rot in bananas and the first report of N. lacticolonia in the country.
All isolates were pathogenic, inducing symptoms of necrotic lesions in the inoculated
fruits. The N. lacticolonia isolates formed four distinct groups when considering the size
of the lesion induced by them in banana. This is the first report of genetically
characterized Nigrospora species associated with postharvest rots in bananas, indicating
that species of the genus have the capacity to infect a large gram of host and that they can
cause different diseases in the same host.
