SUMMARY:

This research focuses on the scientific popularization in the context of initial teacher education for chemistry, based on the proposition that students’ envolvement in science commuication practices collaborates in knowledge construction for teaching. The objective was to identify and analyze what knowledge is developed from participation in scientific popularization activities and how these are perceived by undergraduate chemistry students in their educative process. The qualitative research used a questionnaire containing open and closed questions as data collection technique. The analysis was based on a qualitative content perspective. Eleven undergraduates in chemistry from a federal university participated in the study, who had been systematically developing scientific dissemination actions in different spaces for at least one year. The results indicate that most students were unaware about Science popularizatio before attending university, as well as that participation in such activities contributes to understand this practice and its purposes. Four main learnings were identified: communication skills, mediation of pedagogical activities, critical thinking, planning. Such categories are directly related to knowledge necessary for teaching practice, in particular the dimensions proposed by Shulman: general pedagogical knowledge; knowledge of apprentices and their characteristics; knowledge of educational contexts; knowledge of the purposes, purposes and values of education. In turn, content knowledge content was scarcely mentioned. In conclusion, we believe to be important to invest and involve teachers in the planning and development of activities to Science public communication. In addition to an understanding of the social dimension of the activity, actions of this nature contribute to training teachers who analyze their planning, their communicative strategies and the impacts of these activities on learning.
