SUMMARY:

With the interest of investigating the reception of literacy teachers in Alagoas regarding the National Literacy Policy, we problematized: What is the relationship between the discourse of the National Literacy Policy and the discourses of teachers regarding the theory-practice perspective in literacy? Aiming to answer the investigative intentions, the general objective was defined as: To understand the relation between the discourse of the National Literacy Policy and the teachers' discourses concerning the theory-practice perspective in literacy. The specific objectives were as follows: a) Discuss what underlies the conception of literacy adopted in the PNA; b) Investigate if teachers know the PNA documents (Decree No. 9765 and the PNA Notebook); c) Analyze teachers' understanding of the conception of literacy prescribed in the PNA. This was a quanti-qualitative research, articulating data from a survey with data produced from focus groups. The results indicate that the teachers participating in the research mostly agree with the literacy theory expressed in the PNA, which considers language as a code. However, one of the research participants indicates that the PNA has significantly reduced the concept of literacy, especially when compared to what is developed in practice, which is not restricted to coding and decoding only. In the context of practice, the PNA guides systematic phonics instruction, considered by the teachers participating in the research as an innovative method, suitable for pedagogical practice in literacy.
