SUMMARY:

The aim of this study is to investigate the understandings that male early childhood teachers have about the male presence in early childhood education in the city of Maceió-AL. The gender inequality of Early Childhood Education workers is a worldwide phenomenon, in which men represent a small proportion in this area. The political and academic debate in the international view goes back to the 1970s. Discussions on gender roles were widely debated with the work carried out by the European Commission Childcare Network in the period 1986-1996. Thus, was an urgent need for change, with a target being set to increase men's participation in early childhood care and education services by 20%, which was never achieved. In Brazil, the political debate is still inceptive and the academic field has been significantly expanded, as indicated by research by Cavalcanti (2018), Bonifácio (2019) and the Systematic Literature Review of this study. In Alagoas, there is still no research that addresses this topic. Considering the relevance of the theme, this study intends to answer the question: what is it like to be a man in ECE? The theoretical basis adopted to better understand the topic is the one that discusses the categories: gender, masculinity, motherhood, family, feminization of school teaching and the impacts on public policies for education and child care services. The research uses the Sophos method – Second order phenomenological observation scheme - developed by two Danish researchers (HENSEN, JENSEN, 2004). The purpose of this method is second-order observations, in other words, the researcher observes people watching the films that are discussed in focus groups. The method is inspired by research of Tobin et al (2008), who used visual and polyvocal ethnography to compare early childhood education practices in three countries: Japan, China and the United States of America. For this study, a 30-minute film (HADDAD, JENSEN, 2017) will be shown, which was used in broader research carried out at the Federal University of Alagoas (HADDAD, 2018, 2019, 2020; HADDAD, MARQUES, AMORIM, 2020). The study will be developed in two stages. In the first one, the presence of male workers will be mapped, effective and hired worker, of the public municipal network of early childhood education in the city of Maceió-AL. in order to get an overview of the number of male workers, how they are distributed, their age, the type of position or contract, etc. The second stage will be the implementation of 3 to 6 focus groups composed by 3 to 6 male workers selected in the first stage to discuss the film. The transcript of the discussions makes the empirical material that will be analyzed based on the content analysis of Bardin (2016).
