SUMMARY:

The present thesis aims to investigate the phenomenon of dropout from a student-centered perspective, aiming to advance our understanding of the evidence regarding the main reasons for dropout and how they differ between the graduation programs in Natural Sciences and Mathematics Education. This study, based on scientometric methodology, propels the investigation into three spheres that permeate the theme. The first sphere provides us with an overview by guiding an analysis of the different regions of the country, based on a literature review with data from theses and dissertations obtained from the Biblioteca Digital Brasileira de Teses e Dissertações (BDTD). The analyzed data are based on the connections existing between the quantified information in the found files, drawing on the references of Vincent Tinto, Alain Coulon, and Pierre Bourdieu. The second sphere offers a local perspective, achieved through a diagnosis resulting from the analysis of the dropout situation in the graduation programs in Natural Sciences and Mathematics Education at the Universidade Federal de Alagoas. The aim is to comprehend the causes, the socioeconomic characterization of the dropped-out students, and the historical-temporal trajectory between 2016 and 2023, a period that precedes, encompasses, and passes through the COVID-19 pandemic. The objective is to understand if this catastrophic event has impacted the structuring of the courses regarding this theme. The third sphere will be guided from a perspective opposite to the trajectory of dropout, through the application of questionnaires, with the aim of understanding the conceptions and situations that have enabled the students to persist in their courses. This approach seeks to invert the course of analysis, in contrast to what is commonly observed in the literature. As initial results, 28 works were found in the BDTD that corresponded to the desired source of information for this study. These data have shown theoretical significance in representing and grouping the causes of dropout, and based on them, it was possible to offer a different perspective on the causality and motivation underlying the aspects that surround dropout. The socioeconomic profile of the students who dropped out in the established time series at UFAL was also delineated, and despite being in its early stages, the initial connections and analyses have provided interesting information on the subject. Finally, an initial assay with the application of questionnaires was conducted to guide further discussions on the topic. These initial results will allow us to better understand how dropout manifests itself in the institution in question, as well as in a comparative manner for nationwide studies. Upon concluding this research, the aim is to provide more assertive answers regarding dropout, in an attempt to mitigate the continuous dripping that undermines, in every academic or social situation, the students' commitment to completing their courses.
