SUMMARY:

Intervention based on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has been widely used for the treatment of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The main characteristics of this intervention refer to the fact that it is intensive, individualized, acts in several areas of development, carried out in a one-to-one format before being carried out in groups and in natural environments, includes objectives guided by developmental milestones and teaches caregivers to act as co-therapists. It appears, therefore, that the establishment of objectives is a fundamental characteristic of the intervention based on ABA, allowing it to be directed, effective and adequate to the individual needs of the person with ASD. The objectives of this study are to analyze the literature on teaching goal setting and to teach teachers how to set teaching goals for children with ASD using video modeling. For this, three studies will be conducted. Study 1, which has now been completed, consisted of a systematic literature review to identify and analyze studies that have taught teachers, therapists, and parents of children with ASD to set teaching goals. The search was carried out in the following databases: Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), PsycINFO and Periódicos Capes, with the search string: "target behavior" OR "learning objective" OR "training goal" OR "goal-setting" OR " behavioral objective" AND "behavior analysis" AND training. Only two studies, which described three experiments, met the inclusion criteria. Two of these experiments exposed parents and caregivers of children and adolescents with ASD to explanations on specific topics (eg, sexuality, hygiene) and then asked them to propose teaching objectives related to each topic. The third experiment taught special education teachers to set teaching goals through didactic instruction, modeling, coaching, and immediate corrective feedback. Study 2, which is in progress, consists of making and validating a video for teaching goal setting. To date, a task analysis has been performed to identify the steps needed to establish a teaching objective. The next stages of Study 2 will consist of making the video and its validation. And Study 3 will consist of using the video to teach teachers in a public school to establish teaching objectives. The results of the study will contribute to the literature on training professionals and caregivers to apply ABA-based procedures through the development of material to teach goal setting, which is a fundamental step in ABA-based interventions.
