SUMMARY:

Landfill leachate is a complex and variable effluent with high polluting power due to its high concentration of ammonia and organic matter, besides high concentrations of toxic compounds and heavy metals. It is generated from the decomposition of urban solid waste in landfills and its treatment commonly involves a combination of biological processes and physical-chemical processes so that the final effluent reaches the release limits of the environmental legislation and thus avoids environmental damage. In general, when the leachate is young, standard biological processes can be applied due to the high biodegradability of the effluent (high BOD/D COD ratio). However, when the landfill leachate is mature or stabilised, it is difficult to be treated biologically due to the high ammoniacal nitrogen strength and low BOD/ COD ratio, making the application of physical-chemical processes indispensable, among which the coagulation/flocculation, adsorption and membrane filtration stand out. Since it is difficult to define a typical leachate and there is the need to evaluate the type of treatment viable and efficient in each case, this study aims to evaluate the efficiency of the post-treatment process of leachate from a sanitary landfill in operation, with new and old cells, composed of coagulation/flocculation/decantation, filtration by activated carbon and zeolites, followed by nanofiltration and final polishing by reverse osmosis, in real scale and bench tests, to remove the remaining organic load and nitrogen from the biologically pre-treated leachate. The compliance of the treated effluent to the discharge standards of the Brazilian legislation will also be evaluated. The characterisation of the raw and pre-treated leachate will be done from primary and secondary data of the commonly monitored parameters. Bench scale tests in jar tests for coagulant selection and dosage, and tests in activated carbon and zeolite filters will be carried out for subsequent application in the real scale WWTP. Furthermore, measurements of leachate flow and data on the dimensions of the units that compose the post-treatment will be collected. This work is expected to identify the main characteristics and limitations of the existing post-treatment and technological alternatives that can increase its efficiency, which can serve as a model for other sanitary landfills with similar characteristics.
