SUMMARY:

The uncontrolled discharge of pollutants, such as toxic chemicals, industrial waste or materials that harm the quality of water, soil or air, can cause significant damage to the environment, human health and local fauna and flora. The dairy industry generates a large amount of whey as a by-product of its manufacturing processes, which has a high polluting potential due to its physicochemical characteristics. In this context, bioremediation emerges as a viable solution to overcome this challenge, providing an efficient and economical approach for the total or partial removal of pollutants present in whey. Anaerobic digestion is a method used to treat whey as it generates biogas (energy value), however, a residual digestate with high nitrogen and phosphorus loads, and residual organic load, which still makes it unsuitable for disposal in water bodies. Consortiums of filamentous fungi and microalgae are gaining prominence due to their great capacity for removing organic matter and better assimilation of nitrogen and phosphorus in the treatment of these effluents, without the need to add chemicals and with low energy consumption. Thus, this work will aim to evaluate the treatment of whey from anaerobic digestion and use of residual digestate in the cultivation of microalgae and filamentous fungi, verifying the advantages of using these microorganisms for the stabilization of contaminants, mainly Chemical Demand of Oxygen (COD), Total Nitrogen (TN) and Total Phosphorus (TP). To achieve this, a methodology will be adopted based on three stages: collection and characterization of whey, selection of strains of microalgae and filamentous fungi and carrying out anaerobic digestion of the whey and obtaining the digestates and aerobic treatment of the digestate using a microalga-fungus consortium. The results will consider the minimum removal values requested in CONAMA Resolution nº 430/2011 and nº 357/2005 as well as characterizing the potential of the method to promote the removal of pollutants, always aiming to adapt to the minimum parameters for disposal.
