SUMMARY:

Spiritual care is considered an essential part of the overall treatment planned to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Spiritual suffering is very prevalent among cancer patients, leading to moments of crisis, of which the ignorance of the disease and the process that it means cause great uncertainty. Guided by this statement, this study aims at spirituality in the process of disease uncertainty in cancer patients. Its objective was to analyze spirituality in the disease uncertainty process in cancer patients, with the guiding question: Does spirituality in the disease uncertainty process in cancer patients, constitute a danger or an opportunity for the patient? This is a qualitative research, in which Merle Mishel's Theory of Uncertainty of Disease was used as a theoretical framework, and Bardin's content analysis was used as a methodological framework, and the semi-structured interview, consisting of three parts, as a technique for apprehending information : the first with sociodemographic data, the second, for obtaining a spiritual history, using the CSI-MEMO instrument, and the third part measured the disease uncertainty using the adapted Merle Mishel disease uncertainty scale. Eleven subjects were part of the study, undergoing treatment at the Professor Alberto Antunes University Hospital, of which ten were female and one male, who had various types of cancer and some with metastasis, being possible to learn from the content of their we speak five categories: 1) Religious / spiritual beliefs as sources of comfort in the uncertainty of the disease; 2) Religious / spiritual beliefs and the way they influence decisions; 3) Spiritual / religious beliefs as strategies for coping with cancer; 4) Sources of support during the walk here and 5) Expectations around the cure. The answer to the research question showed that spirituality in the uncertainty of the disease varies from subject to subject in each one acting in a unique way. It was identified that these two possibilities are presented depending on the moment the subject was experiencing, leading the subjects to readaptation attitudes. The presence of spirituality in their lives, acted as the main form of coping with the disease, being able to move the subject from a danger zone, to an opportunity, and this moment was called by Mishel, of probabilistic thinking.
