SUMMARY:

The object of this study is the experiences of mothers by adoption in light of Ramona Thieme Mercer's middle range nursing theory. Adoption is provided for in the Child and Adolescent Statute and is established by law. The nursing team has a solid role developed in family health care through biological training, with published studies on the period of pregnancy, delivery, puerperium and childcare and general monitoring in primary care. With regard to families by adoption, their main references for guidance and planning are the teams from the childhood and youth courts and the Adoption Support Groups. Thus, the guiding question was “What are the maternal experiences of adoption?” and the objective was to understand the experiences of mothers through adoption in the light of Ramona Mercer's theory. Qualitative and descriptive study analyzed from the perspective of the Becoming a Mother Theory. The scenario was the Support Group for Adoption of Alagoas and the participants were mothers by adoption. The production of information was through a structured interview carried out virtually on the Google Meet platform, from June to July 2022. The analysis was through the method proposed by Bardin and the phases described in the theory Become a mother. The study was developed with the approval of the Research Ethics Committee under opinion number 5,417,957 and CAAE: 56163722.0.0000.5013. Eight mothers by adoption participated in this study and the speeches were organized according to the four phases described by Ramona Mercer: (a) commitment, attachment and preparation; (b) knowledge, learning and physical restoration; (c) move towards a new normal; and (d) obtaining maternal identity. Speeches with concepts that the theory characterizes as important to be observed in consultations or nursing research were also described. The partial results focused on the context of adopting children contemplate the aspects addressed in the Becoming a Mother Theory, and thus, as partial final considerations, contributions to nursing care in the fields of family health, maternal and child health are highlighted. , pediatric nursing and collective health, as well as the development of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary interventions for families formed by adoption.
