SUMMARY:

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought about transformations and impacts on population health care and work processes across the service network, which have been affected by the need for reorganization in the face of the new coronavirus, including child care in primary care. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the nursing process in child care in Primary Health Care in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. This descriptive, analytical study with a qualitative approach was conducted in Maceió-Alagoas with nursing professionals working in primary care during the Covid-19 pandemic. A semi-structured audio-recorded interview was conducted with 15 professionals on-site, from August to November 2022, after approval by the ethics committee. All were female nurses, with an average age of 51 years and 6 to 20 years of experience in primary care. Fourteen had specialization and one had a master's degree, with areas of specialization being diverse, including 11 in public health and family health. After exhaustive reading, the structure of the sense nuclei and elucidative categories of the nursing work process was sought, focusing on the dimensions of care, research, teaching, management, and political thinking in relation to child care during the pandemic. In this context, care and teaching were highlighted. In the care dimension, the focus was on illness as the object of work, since actions for children are geared towards illness due to distancing and interruption of care. Some professionals indicated that consultations were intended for sick children. The importance of soft technologies such as welcoming was highlighted, but there was also a lack of basic resources for child care, such as notebooks, measuring tapes, scales, and anthropometers. The purpose of the work fell on child immunization, with different actions and strategies described for maintaining the child's vaccination schedule and actively seeking out those with delayed vaccines, as well as challenges in resuming child development surveillance. In the teaching dimension, the desire and need for nurses to train themselves in child care for quality nursing care was identified. Professionals emphasized the disconnect between management and continuing education efforts. The nursing consultation was seen as an opportunity to educate parents and caregivers about child care, while the training of nursing technicians was presented as a challenge. On the other hand, coordination and guidance with Community Health Agents were seen as a positive strategy for disseminating information on child care. However, the dimensions of management, research, and political participation were less evident in the nurses' work process with children during the pandemic.
