SUMMARY:

Introduction: Studies have investigated the repercussions of postgraduate studies on the mental health of master's and doctoral students, which has been proven to be even more impacted by the New Coronavirus pandemic, which broke out in Brazil in 2020. As they are exposed to numerous stressors inherent to their training , such as insecurity regarding their career and the job market, these professionals who study and are researchers in training are faced with financial conflicts, competitiveness, demands for productivity and meeting
deadlines. In this way, investment in awareness-raising, preventive and interventional actions that reach postgraduate students can contribute to the management of mental health, and it is necessary, before that, to know the learning needs of students. Objective: To identify, from the perspective of postgraduate students and coordinators of postgraduate programs, the learning needs of students to promote mental health. Methodology: Descriptive-exploratory study with a qualitative approach, approved by the Ethics Committee for Research with Human Beings, under opinion number 5,384,965. 40 stricto-sensu postgraduate students participated in this research, with representatives from the five Brazilian regions and six postgraduate course coordinators. The information was collected from February to June 2023, through seven online focus groups, using the Google Meet® platform. The triggering question used was “What do you have questions about or would you like to learn to promote your mental health?”, which was adapted for the coordinators. To collect the data, the groups were recorded using the OBS Studio® platform and subsequently transcribed using the Transkriptor® platform. The analysis of the results was based on the content analysis technique, in the thematic modality, proposed by Bardin. Results: Among the participants, 17 were from the Southeast region, 13 from the Central-West region, five from the South region; four from the Northeast region and one from the North region. Among the participants, 27 were female and 13 were male. Of the participants, 17 were master's students, 17 were doctoral students, one was a master, one was a doctor and one was a post-doctor. With the data analysis, three thematic categories emerged, namely: (Re)learning to share with yourself and with others, The weight of (in)experience and Learning to be a mentor. Final Considerations: The study achieved the objective of identifying the students' learning needs, which range from support and dialogue with peers to learning scientific methodology and how to actually become a supervisor. In this way, it is understood that the study contributes so that programs can develop mental health promotion strategies that are more targeted to the needs of the student, thus contributing to their well-being, fulfillment and greater productivity in order to achieve the objectives of post-graduate courses. degree in which these professionals are inserted, without causing physical, mental and social harm.
