SUMMARY:

The city of Maceió, Alagoas, is in the coastal tropical region of Brazil, characterized by
high solar radiation throughout the year. Despite this, the application of large, glazed
openings in residential and commercial buildings in the city is common. In this context,
this study aimed to analyze the influence of flat glass applied in facades on the thermal
variability of indoor environments in residential and commercial buildings, taking the city
of Maceió as the study area. This is experimental research, in which two case studies were
examined: a residential building on the seafront, with environments featuring glazed
openings of different sizes; and a commercial building in the city's commercial center,
with rooms of different spatial configurations. The results were analyzed in two blocks:
qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative analysis was performed based on diagrams
studying the penetration of sunlight through the glazed openings in each environment,
drawn from azimuthal and solar height angles. The quantitative analysis was carried out
based on data obtained through monitoring campaigns conducted with the aid of data
loggers, recording air temperature at hourly intervals on summer days. The results suggest
a relationship between the percentage of glazed opening area and thermal gain in the
environments, which can lead to significantly high air temperatures. Thus, it is
highlighted that, although glass offers aesthetic and functional benefits, its use in facades
in the tropical climate should be carefully planned and combined with shading devices
and thermal control technologies. These measures are essential to ensure user thermal
comfort, reduce electricity consumption for cooling, and promote environmental
sustainability of buildings in the tropical climate context.
