SUMMARY:
The precarious situation of the Brazilian prison system is a fact arising in the country's media, highlighting the precarious conditions of prison structures, overcrowding, riots, rebellions and domination by criminal factions. (ALBUQUERQUE AND ARAÚJO, 2018; SIQUEIRA ET AL, 2017) As Silva et al (2021), from the G1 Globo news portal, highlight that in 2021 the prison population decreased for the first time since 2014, but still remain with the overcrowding of 54.9% over capacity. It is also noted the growing interest in the study of prison environments in various areas of knowledge in the last decade, although still small in relation to need. With regard to prison officers, several authors focus their studies on the effects of working conditions on the quality of life and on the physical and mental health of these servers. Notably, in some studies there is a direct relationship between mental illnesses and the infrastructure and organization of the work environment. (ALBUQUERQUE AND ARAÚJO, 2018; CORREA, 2015; REINERT et. al, 2020; SIQUEIRA ET AL, 2017) For Villarouco and Costa (2020), ergonomics refers to comfort, well-being and the total adequacy to human beings of all the elements of the environment in which they are inserted. These authors describe the term “environment” as the workplace, from the understanding of human relations, instruments, raw materials, methods and work organization. Thus, it was possible to perceive the importance of ergonomics in this context of the daily work of Prison Agents. The interest in the bias highlighted here arises from the hypothesis that Prison Officers have a great propensity to get physically and mentally ill due to their work and that it is possible to identify the relationship of these events with the ergonomics of the built environment with a focus on the cognitive sphere. Considering that most of the illnesses reported in previous studies (ALBUQUERQUE AND ARAÚJO, 2018; CORREA, 2015; REINERT et. al, 2020; SIQUEIRA ET AL, 2017) are of the mental scope, such as stress, depression, anxiety and psychosomatic illnesses.
