SUMMARY:

The roof is characterized as an important means of heat transfer between the internal and
external areas of the building. The use of an efficient, economical and durable roof
covering or under-covering can solve major problems caused by the high rate of thermal
discomfort in the population during hot and dry periods in a given place. In this context,
bamboo emerges as an alternative that presents many advantages, such as high resistance,
fast growth, and high performance. Besides being a natural and biodegradable element of
low cost, which does not require skilled labor, and is easily found in the region of
Arapiraca, Alagoas. The objective of this research is to identify and enhance the
advantages of bamboo (
Guadua paniculata) as an under-roof and lining compared to
conventional roofing systems (ceramic tile and fiber-cement roofing tile) in the climatic
context of the semi-arid region of Alagoas, with its hot and dry climate. The method used
was a systematic literature review on the use of bamboo in construction and also the
monitoring of hourly data on the internal and external surface temperatures of the roofing
and the lining and under-roofing, as well as the internal air temperature in the attic and
inside the test cells. As results were found, the use of the under-covering for the climatic
context of the semi-arid region of Alagoas, proved to be favorable for both types of
covering analyzed, reaching an average surface temperature difference of up to 7.8 K and
15.3 K in absolute terms at noon, when the sun was at its highest level. Furthermore, the
lining fixed without the use of the under-covering can only be recommended for the
ceramic tile roof. The internal air temperature (below the lining), reached an average
difference of 0.8 K with the ceramic tile (comparing the SF with the witness cell) while
with fiber cement this average difference reached 1.6 K, showing that the air temperature
in the SF was warmer than the witness cell. The use of bamboo as lining and underroofing was an efficient strategy to avoid high thermal amplitude in the indoor
environment, an important aspect to obtain thermal comfort, and may also contribute to
the aesthetic and urban environmental quality. Sobretudo, pode-se destacar a influência
da cobertura, na qual a telha cerâmica apresentou bons resultados de amortização térmica
entre as células com subcobertura e laparro de bambu comparadas à célula teste
testemunho.
