SUMMARY:

Population growth in urban centers has driven a gradual process of modification from the natural to the built environment. These transformations condition a typically urban climate, often characterized by increased air temperature, a phenomenon known as urban heat islands (ICU). In the search for sustainable and resilient cities, the literature points to the compact city model, and verticalization emerges as an alternative to enable the increase in population density. The study of urban canyons can contribute to the conformation of microclimatic conditions favorable to thermal comfort at pedestrian level. Thus, the present research aimed to analyze the influence of verticalization on outdoor thermal comfort conditions at the pedestrian scale, considering aspects of urban geometry and the use of vegetation, in the semi-arid climatic context of Arapiraca/AL. The method started from a predictive approach, with computational simulation of hypothetical urban models elaborated from an urban fraction with a tendency to verticalization. For this, the ENVI-met software, version 5.1.1, was used as a tool. For the elaboration of the models, aspects of the urban form (urban geometry and the use of vegetation) were treated through traditional urban parameters (minimum initial/progressive setback, gauge, permeability rate) combined with the use of pilotis and the insertion of trees on the sidewalks, starting from the lot as a minimum planning unit. The environmental analysis of the simulated models was based quantitatively and qualitatively. Quantitatively, the data will be submitted to
a statistical treatment through the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), as a linear model. Qualitatively, based on the result obtained in the statistical treatment, the scenarios with more and less satisfactory indices of thermal performance will be analyzed comparatively from graphs and maps in 2D, in order to observe the behavior of the equivalent physiological temperature index (PET), mean radiant temperature (MRT), relative humidity and the speed / direction of the winds (windward and leeward), which are the climatic variables indicated according to the Systematic Literature Review (RSL). Based on the results to be obtained, it is expected to contribute to the urban planning process, especially with regard to the constructive densification process in a city with a semi-arid climate, in order to contribute to urban sustainability and outdoor thermal comfort conditions on a pedestrian scale.
