INHABITING URBAN SPACE: THE HOMELESS POPULATION FROM THE CENTER NEIGHBORHOOD OF ARACAJU (SE)

The homeless population is part of the scenario of social challenges in large cities
of the world. This population narrates its trajectory marked by multiple disconnections,
persistent and cumulative. The research in question focuses on the population in
street situation in the Centro neighborhood of Aracaju (SE), immersed in a reality of
social vulnerability that represents one of the most extreme forms of urban poverty.
The central purpose of this dissertation is to understand the relationship between the population in
street with the urban space of the Centro neighborhood of Aracaju (SE), focusing on the challenges
which involve ways of living and the right to the city. In specific terms,
aims to describe living in urban space, the public policies available to
offer support to those who live on the streets, the determinants of living on the streets; investigate the
factors that led the population to become homeless and their relationship with space
urban, based on observation and collected life stories; and carry out a
mapping that highlights aporophobia, characterized by aversion and hostility towards
relation to the poor and socially vulnerable, including the identification of places of greatest
concentration of this population. The research is committed to the importance of
promote a sense of community, encourage active participation and ensure well-being
collective as essential elements for a full experience in urban space. The shape
how different social groups inhabit urban space contributes to the creation of
distinct spatial configurations, which, in some situations, can generate feelings
of fear and stigma. This has influenced the modification of urban space, leading to the
adoption of practices such as hostile architecture, which aims to reduce or prevent the appropriation
certain urban areas, often excluding them from specific areas of the
city.
