Despite the importance of commerce in the dynamics and production of urban spaces, there is a prejudice, on the part of scholars, and a negligence, on the part of governments, in understanding and producing policies aimed at this sector of the economy. But, as Vargas 2018 reiterates), the tertiary is there, creating and solving problems in urban spaces.
The situation we find in our large cities, not just in Brazil, is precisely this: An excess supply of retail activities, from street vendors to shopping malls, which occupy public space spontaneously and sometimes inappropriately, damaging the quality of life collective, as well as small businesses and the urban economy as a whole.
In this sense, this research focuses on in-depth analysis of the so-called independent businesses, as it is understood that they are the largest producers in urban scenes. The Shopping Center approach, in turn, is made in order to understand the phenomena of decentralization of commerce in Maceió with the arrival of the city's first Shopping Center.
