SUMMARY:

The deaf community has its own way of communicating through sign language, allowing them to fluently express themselves on various subjects at any given moment. However, in communication among groups of deaf young adults and adults, the understanding of some signs may be compromised if movements involving the dominant and non-dominant hand are, for example, performed with the same hand. It is important to study the various ways deaf individuals use signing in conversation, recognizing conditioned signs. Thus, this work, situated in the field of Phonology and Phonetics of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), aims to analyze hand reduction within the parameters of Libras among deaf individuals fluent in Libras in Fortaleza, Florianópolis, and Maceió. Theoretical references in Linguistics include Stokoe (1960), Xavier (2011, 2014), Gripp (2010), Karnopp and Quadros (2004), and Brito (2010). Methodologically, we conducted a qualitative investigation based on the CNPQ (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) research project titled "National Libras Inventory." We used the ELAN software to select segments from a track based on glosses that indicate signs with hand reduction in Libras. Through the analysis of glosses in ELAN interviews, we selected six deaf women and four deaf men from Fortaleza, Maceió, and Florianópolis, including high school and college students, as well as Libras teachers. We analyzed the Libras Corpus in three categories: (1) reduction of signs with dominant and non-dominant hand on the face/facial expression; (2) reduction in neutral space and contextualization of signs; and (3) reduction of hands in finger spelling in Libras. Concerning the first category, we observed that there are no linguistic rules for reductions in facial expression. In addition to hands, the structure of the communication space or parts of the body is used, along with strategies such as rhythms and quick or slow signals, but without a defined structure. Nevertheless, deaf individuals can understand their peers' discourse. Regarding the second category, we noticed that mouth articulations help recall words associated with signs in memory – a dependence between Portuguese and Libras – even when reductions occur due to clarity in facial expression. Concerning the third category, Portuguese and Libras have different semantic relationships. Comparing Portuguese words and finger spelling in sign language, we observed reductions in finger spelling. Some signs, however, are not affected by reductions, and therefore, it is possible to use one hand when the other is occupied with objects, even though the reduction of hands in finger spelling makes sign comprehension more challenging. In conclusion, Libras reduction occurs more frequently in the left (passive) hand, and this is a natural consequence of communication in the deaf community. Furthermore, it is reaffirmed that this reduction does not constitute a problem or communication failure, and the signer is not obliged to use both supporting hands to establish understandable dialogue. In fact, the reduction of some parameters is a natural linguistic characteristic, especially when this parameter of Libras is conversational.
