SUMMARY:

This research aims to investigate how deaf adults establish hyponyms and hyperonyms in Libras, making a comparison with deaf children and hearing adults. The research carried out by Santos (2018) points out that both deaf and hearing children had a high rate of hyperonyms instead of hyponyms, in tasks elicited with the semantic field animals. This time, we will focus on deaf adult participants to understand how adult lexical acquisition interferes with hyponym construction strategies, that is, how deaf adults, having had more experiences and having a more extensive vocabulary, can present more comprehensive results than children. deaf. In addition, we also intend to deepen the linguistic analysis of these productions of hyponyms, on the one hand with the contributions of Johnston and Schembri (2007) on the structure of representation signs, which appear as strategies of composition of hyponyms in Santos (2018), as on the other hand, from the assumptions of Klima and Bellugi (1979), who deal with an organization that places base signals as a reference, and superordinate and subordinate signals in relation to the base signal. In this sense, the DOG signal is a basic item, while the PITBULL is a subordinate item. We will establish a relationship between these concepts, and the concepts of Hypernym and Hiponym to deepen the analysis of the data. The research methodology will be developed, a priori, by bibliographical research, in order to verify the state of the art of the approached theme. Afterwards, on-site observation will be carried out. Based on the methodology developed by Santos (2018), 10 deaf and 10 hearing participants will be selected. For the deaf, the inclusion criteria will be: Having profound bilateral deafness, being fluent in Libras and being over 18 years old. What Grolla and Silva (2014) calls elicited production tasks will be carried out. Sheets will be presented with images of 4 types of animals: Cat (8 species), Dog (8 species), Bird (8 species) and Monkey (8 species), and participants will produce signs that refer to each species presented. In data processing, we will use the codes proposed by Santos (2018) for each type of production (e.g. HIPE + MOD, i.e. hypernym plus modifier). Finally, the data will be statistically analyzed in the JMP ® 9.0.1 Statistical Discovery software so that they can be expressed quantitatively. In a second moment, we will also analyze, based on Klima and Bellugi (1979), how subordinate elements (considered in this research as hyponyms) are produced in Libras, in addition to describing the use of modifiers in Libras , based on the model proposed by Johnston and Schembri (2007) for representational signs of Australian Sign Language, this time with data from Libras. As it is an ongoing research, we do not have concrete results, however, we understand that the results may bring important reflections on the process of categorization and composition in Libras. and about how iconicity can be directly related to the production of hyponyms and hypernyms.
