On the nature of SEU in vocatives in Brazilian Portuguese
Vocative, pronominal form seu, Brazilian Portuguese, trace geometry
This doctoral thesis aims to describe the nature of the form seu and its variants (of
gender and number) in the context of vocative phrases in Brazilian Portuguese, in
which there is an equivalence of use as a form of address. Our research aims to
elucidate which compositional features, present in the form seu, are responsible for
the reading of possession or reduced form of the pronoun of address senhor. Thus,
initially, we seek to describe the syntactic contexts in which this pronominal form is
used, considering the different readings (possessive or treatment), to present an
analysis proposal that discusses the constitution of its grammatical features, which
are responsible for its processing by the grammatical system of the language. The
theoretical perspective of this research proposal is Chomsky's theory of generative
grammar, in its minimalist version (CHOMSKY, 1995 and subsequent works). For this
purpose, we consider some of the studies that have discussed the nature of the
pronominal form in question: Cerqueira (1996), who presents a proposal in terms of
reconfiguring person traits, given the competing readings between second and third
person for the form "seu"; Müller (1997), who considers the linking contexts in which
this form is licensed as an anaphor; Castro (2006), who explores the determiner
status of this form when licensed in prenominal position. In addition, the analysis and interpretation of the data will consider Carvalho's (2002) proposal in terms of a theory
of trace geometry for the Portuguese pronominal system. We hypothesize that the
different uses of the form "seu" in Portuguese result from different compositions of
features and that a theory of feature geometry could be a way of explaining the
phenomenon.
