A ORDEM DE ELEMENTOS INTERROGATIVOS EM LIBRAS
Interrogative elements; Libras; Syntax.
The position of the interrogative element "wh" in Libras sentences involves a
complex process that includes the "wh" in situ, moved or doubled. Despite the
various linguistic cues and non-manual markers available, determining the preferred position
of these elements in the speech of native deaf individuals is a challenge. Studies provide
contrasting perspectives regarding the Spec of CP position in sign languages (Lillo-Martin
and Quadros, 2004; Neidle et al., 2000). However, research on the factors influencing the
position of this element is still in its early stages and, in some cases, conflicting.
This study aims to analyze interrogative sentences in Brazilian Sign Language that contain
"wh" elements. Specifically, we examine the sign for “what” and all its
grammatical information. We observe the impact of non-manual markers and prosody
throughout the entire sentence that features this element in various positions, investigating
their syntactic characteristics and their relationship with sentence structure (initial, final, or
duplicated).
To achieve our objectives, we used elicited tests for the production and acceptability of
sentences with native deaf participants. We present the preliminary results obtained from the
data analysis. Out of the six research participants, two underwent the pilot test, and four
participated in the main test. So far, we have analyzed the data from two participants, which
has allowed us to identify interesting patterns in the placement of this interrogative element in
Libras sentences.
