SUMMARY:

This work seeks to understand the encounters and disagreements between one of the largest media conglomerates in Brazil, Rede Globo, and the candidate for the presidency of the Republic, in the 2018 elections, Jair Messias Bolsonaro, through Historical Materialist Discourse Analysis. As well as, to analyze the effects of meanings that construct the speeches about the then candidate that circulate in the main newscast of the station, the Jornal Nacional, seeking to understand how the image of the candidate and president-elect is constructed throughout 2018 and 2019 and, so, investigate at which moments the media and the candidate/president subject align and diverge.. We took as a reference period for the analysis of the telenews editions available on the broadcaster’s streaming (Globo Play), in the period from August 2018, period in which candidacies are approved by the Superior Electoral Court, to February 2019, when the Bolsonaro government completes a month of work. We emphasize that the corpus was selected from the events of the period mentioned above, highlighting the escalations - news headlines that will be developed throughout the edition of that day - and the openings of reports, both having as characters the news anchors William Bonner and Renata Vasconcelos. To achieve what is proposed, this research is anchored in Historical Materialist Discourse Analysis, founded by Michel Pêcheux. Throughout this work, we sought to understand the functioning of the speeches and the effects of meaning that build the narrative about the former federal deputy for Rio de Janeiro, seeking to understand, through the speech, how Rede Globo positions itself in relation to the candidate and soon after, president of Brazil. Here we understand that the journalistic discourse starts primarily from the logic of defending the ideological and financial interests of the communication groups, which build effects of impartiality senses to transform the journalistic discourse into a product that convinces the public that what is being presented is the truth about that fact. In order to be able to account for what was proposed, we resorted to Discourse Analysis rooted in historical materialism, which understands discourse from the perspective of class struggle.
