SUMMARY:

This Master Thesis examines Insubmissas lágrimas de mulheres, a book of short stories by the Brazilian writer Conceição Evaristo. The study aims at the status of subalternity of women, of the violence suffered by Black women and how the writer subverts such situation by bringing the margin to the centre by means of her writing, and by showing how the voices of female characters are presented in her work by considering the Black woman and her long silenced and/or erased voice from literature. I also consider how the violence suffered by these women has contributed to their silencing. To support the critical reflections, Spivak’s (2010) problematising of the subaltern, Dalcastagnès’s (2011 [2005]) study of Black female characters in Brazilian literature, Santos’s (2018) discussion about the role of the Black writer as a contemporary intellectual, Bourdieu’s (2021) and Saffioti’s (2015) understanding of the concept of symbolic  and other kinds of violence, among others. Apart from that, Evaristo’s critical readers will be part of my study in order to provide a wide critical readership. This thesis is divided into tree chapters: the first one is about the writer, with biographical and writing notes, as well as presenting her notion of “escrevivência”, a term she coined and problematize. The second chapter brings concepts and reflections about violence and about violence against women. The third and final chapter analyses the short stories: “Aramides Florença”, “Natalina Soledad”, “Shirley Paixão”, “Isaltina Campo Belo” and “Lia Gabriel” as a way to answer for the issues posed for the thesis.
