SUMMARY:

The creation of the Unified Health System determines a new model of health care, whose organizational axis is integrality. Thus, with the objective of re-discussing and transforming health practices, the Ministry of Health launched the National Humanization Policy, presenting welcoming to the family as an operational guideline for changing the work process. The university as an instrument for social transformation and critical and reflective thinking has the role of fostering new health practices, having as reference the health needs of the population and government policies. Objective: to analyze the teaching of embracement to the family during undergraduate nursing at a federal university in Northeastern Brazil. Method: this is an exploratory-descriptive study with a qualitative approach that used the focus group as a method of data collection and discourse analysis according to Bardin for data analysis. Results: 62.5% of the graduates of the undergraduate nursing course participated in the study. All female. 60% of the students affirm that the content about welcoming the family is not seen during the undergraduate course. Qualified listening is cited as inherent and essential to welcoming. For the study participants, welcoming is more feasible in primary care. Final considerations: The undergraduate students have knowledge about hosting. The theme is addressed during graduation, however, without theoretical deepening. The discipline that most deals with the subject in the course is mental health. It is also concluded that the development of welcoming actions, according to the undergraduate students, is easier in primary care than in the hospital network
