SUMMARY:

Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate how levels of empathy are manifested in medical students throughout their undergraduate course. Methods: This is a quantitative, analytical, observational and cross-sectional study carried out in a private higher education institution in the Northeast of Brazil. The research was carried out through the application of the Jefferson Medical Empathy Scale - version for students (JSPE-vs) and the correlation of the data obtained in the scale with the graduation period and the students' sociodemographic profile, in order to verify which of these correlations are significant for the expression of empathy levels in the studied group. Data collection took place between the months of October and November of 2020. The survey had 193 participants, including freshman, intermediate cycle and seniors. The sampling used was for accessibility and convenience. Results: More than half of the participants (57%) were between 18 and 24 years old. There was a predominance of females (69.4%) over males (30.6%). The vast majority of them were single (88.6%), without children (93.8%), without paid activity (75.6%) and without any disease or health problem that they considered impacting (89.6%). As for the reason for choosing the course, 112 of them (58%) said it was due to vocation. Almost half (45.1%) intend to work in the clinical area and the other half were divided between not knowing (29.5%) or continuing in the surgical area (25.4%). In the set of all study participants (n=193), the global score of empathy and of each of the three psychometric factors of the JSPE-vs were like this: global (123.56 ± 11.73); factor 1 - compassionate care (72.32 ± 6.23); factor 2 - ability to put oneself in the patient's shoes (9.49 ± 2.83); and factor 3 - perspective taking (41.76 ± 5.91). There was no statistical difference between global scores and by psychometric factor in the comparison between the three groups studied (freshman, intermediate cycle, seniors). And in the correlation of the JSPE-vs with the data from the sociodemographic questionnaire, those of the female sex and those who chose the course by vocation showed significantly higher levels of empathy. Conclusion: In general, the participants showed satisfactory levels of empathy towards the patient. Although we did not observe a decrease in the levels of empathy during graduation, as mentioned in some studies, especially from the third year of the course, the need to continually address these issues remains urgent, because in this lies the possibility of these future professionals doctors consolidate, in fact, the ability to empathize, acquire a balanced technicalscientific-humanistic posture and exercise a medicine of excellence.
