SUMMARY:

Introduction: Dental Radiology and Imaging stands out in Dentistry for the indispensable use of computers and technologies. Recent studies in online education have shown favorable results for the teaching-learning process. General objective: to analyze the implementation of a periapical radiographic image bank used as an online teaching and learning strategy in the discipline Dental Radiology and Imaging at a Dental School in Maceio. Method: case study with a qualitative-quantitative approach. An online teaching-learning strategy was developed through the use of an e-learning tool (a digital dental radiographic image bank). The image bank has a total of 58 digital periapical radiographic images, which were selected by experts in the area. Captions with didactics animations were added to these images, indicating the periapical radiographic anatomy. The study was applied to undergraduates in the 4th period of the Dentistry course, in the discipline Dental Radiology and Imaging, and was carried out in six steps: 1. Pre-test (questionnaire with 10 questions of interpretation of periapical radiographic anatomy); 2. Dialogued exhibition using the image bank; 3. Asynchronous activity with the image bank available and theoretical reference; 4. Post-test (questionnaire with 10 questions on the interpretation of periapical radiographic anatomy); 5. Feedback (synchronous moment of discussion of the questions) and 6. Instrument for evaluation of the reaction and student motivation (through the application of a questionnaire containing 36 multiple choice questions and based on the model of motivational theory of learning Attention, Relevance, Confidence and Satisfaction - ARCS (KELLER, 2006); associated with an open question, with the development of a narrative, about the experience lived by the students when performing this activity. Results: The average grades in the pre-test was 4.60 and in the post-test -test was 7.2 points. When comparing the means using Mann-Whitney U test, a significant p-value was observed (p=0.0009). When comparing the pre-test to the post-test, there was an increase of 41.6% of the grades above the average grade (6.0). High scores were identified in the motivational scale scores, which showed satisfactory results, where 100% of the students who answered the questionnaire agreed that the activity was interesting, stimulated curiosity, felt confident that he or she could learn the content, really enjoyed studying this activity, it was a pleasure to work on such a well-planned activity, and it was good to complete this activity successfully. Most of the dental students expressed enthusiasm and satisfaction with successful speeches in answering the reflective open question. Some weaknesses such as low student adherence and evasion in their participation in the evaluation stages were observed. Some reported that the activities had many items to be answered. Conclusion: E-learning application facilitates understanding in the interpretation of radiographic images. The use of innovative e-learning tools is promising for teaching Dental Radiology.
