SUBÁREA: Meteorologia
SUMMARY:

Every year fires destroy millions of hectares of forests and increase in number as a
consequence of several factors, mainly anthropic and climatological factors. The burned in the
Brazilian Northeast (NEB) have been intensifying over the last 30 years, whether due to
agricultural activity or extreme drought events. Therefore, the study evaluated the
spatiotemporal variability of fire foci (FF) via environmental satellites in the three
mesoregions in the State of Alagoas: Arid Zone, East and Hinterland Alagoano and their
socio-geoenvironmental impacts. The FF data came from the Burned Database
(BDQueimadas) from 1998 to 2020. The time series of FF was submitted to descriptive,
exploratory and multivariate statistical analyzes (Cluster Analysis - CA) applied to the
municipalities belonging to the mesoregions of Alagoas. Based on the CA technique via
Ward's hierarchical method, three homogeneous groups (G1, G2 and G3) were identified in
Arid Zone and two homogeneous groups in Hinterland and East Alagoas (G1 and G2). Some
municipalities did not form groups (NA), such as Belo Monte (Arid Zone), Limoeiro de
Anadia, São Sebastião and Traipu (Hinterland) and Penedo and Coruripe (East). The
variability of FF in these municipalities can be associated with agricultural activities, for
example, subsistence agriculture, deforestation and the formation of new areas for raising
animals and, mainly, sugarcane monoculture. Regarding the descriptive statistics of the
homogeneous groups formed in the Arid Zone was: and the NA group (26.83 ± 25.87 foci). In
the East there were G1 (36.33 ± 42.37 foci) and G2 (174.24 ± 143.51 foci) and NA group
(407.98 ± 323.68 foci) and in the Hinterland they were G1 (5.31 ± 6 .45 foci) G2 (16.98 ±
19.57 foci) and NA (52.06 ± 42.47 foci). In the spatial evaluation, the total period (1998-
2020) and the highlighted years in the time series (2012 and 2019) were used via FF density
per municipality. It is noteworthy that the highest FF density record in the total period is
found in the Eastern Alagoas mesoregion and this is due to the municipalities that are the
largest sugarcane producers, followed by the deforestation of the Atlantic Forest biome,
which in turn occupies the area and extends from the coast to the Hinterland. It is not
discarded that the highlighted years are influenced by the occurrence of drought and dry
periods, common in the State of Alagoas.
