SUMMARY:

Ozone (O3) is a gas present in the Earth's atmosphere that contributes significantly to the energy balance of the atmosphere. During some processes involving this gas, ultraviolet (UV) energy from the Sun is absorbed. As a result, heat is released in the form of energy into the atmosphere, mostly in the stratosphere, a layer where these processes are abundant, modeling the atmospheric profile. The release of energy also influences the atmospheric energy balance and general circulation, causing changes in modes of variability such as El Niño – Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Southern Annular Mode (SAM). It is known that the ENOS and SAM variability modes are strongly linked to ozone concentrations and this relationship may become even stronger in future scenarios due to the constant anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, therefore, a detailed understanding of this theme is essential, mainly with studies focused on the Southern Hemisphere (SH), where these modes exert a great influence on several variables, including ozone, and this influence is still not fully understood. Therefore, the objective of the study presented here is to expand the knowledge regarding the average behavior of O3 concentrations in the entire SH area when under the influence or not of the ENOS and SAM variability modes. For this, anomalies in the concentrations of O3 will be analyzed when the ENOS El Niño (La Niña) or the positive (negative) SAM phase is active.
