SUMMARY:

The mammalian fauna in the Caatinga is still the least studied in Brazil (Carmignotto and Astúa 2017). In addition to a few references that sought to gather the historical knowledge of this group in the biome (Mares et al. 1981, Willig and Mares 1989, Oliveira et al. 2003, Carmignotto et al. 2012, Carmignotto and Astúa 2017)  there are occasional more recent field works that have tried to expand this sample (Geise et al. 2010, Delciellos 2016, Cruz et al. 2017, Conceição and Bocchiglieri 2021, among others), and if we think about small mammals, these studies are even more scarce.

Datasets have proven to be robust tools for a multitude of research: population and community ecology (Marjakangas et al. 2020), forest fragmentation and defaunation (Bovendorp et al. 2018), areas of endemism and conservation strategies (Dalapicolla et al. 2021), climate change effect (Freitas-Oliveira et al. 2021), spatial conservation prioritization (Kujala et al. 2018), and many other potential applications in habitat/microhabitat use, landscape ecology, macroecology and biogeography.

Recently, there has been an effort in the elaboration of datasets aimed at or encompassing small mammals (Bovendorp et al. 2017, Figueiredo et al. 2017, Gonçalves et al. 2018), but we could not find any public datapaper focusing on small mammals from any arid or semi-arid regions of the world. Therefore, this is the first mammal dataset for the New World’s largest seasonally dry tropical forest (SDTF): the Caatinga biome.
