In the rhythm of the Urban Quilombo: Culture, Politics, Militancy and Social Struggles in Maranhão's Hip-Hop
Militancy. Politics. Culture. Hip-Hop.
The present research aims to analyze the forms of articulation between culture and politics undertaken by the organized hip-hop movement Quilombo Urbano in Maranhão, founded in 1989, but baptized with the terminology presented here in 1992. Its participants are mostly men and women from the outskirts of the city of São Luís, capital of Maranhão, who claim to be blacks "of the broken", revolutionaries, and socialists. Throughout this research, we hope to understand how the Quilombo Urbano organizes its actions focused on culture and politics, and what goals they intend to achieve through these activities. We intend to investigate the trajectories of some members of the movement, to present some ethnographic accounts of acts and actions, and to reflect on the processes originating from internal and external disputes. This research is methodologically based on qualitative data and has an interdisciplinary theoretical basis. The data will be extracted from field research, interviews, ethnographies, discourse analysis, lyrics, rhymes, and document analysis. This research is in full development and we do not have full results to present until the present moment, May 2022.
