From the edges to the center: challenges of resistance faced by those affected by Braskem's mining in Maceió-AL
environmental conflict; Braskem; Maceió; mining; margins; resistance.
This research aims to investigate the environmental conflict caused by the company Braskem in Alagoas and its implications in the struggle of those affected. It is anchored in the theoretical and methodological perspective that views conflict as a source for political shifts capable of promoting rearrangements in the public sphere, giving greater possibility for the subalterns/dispossessed to influence the decisions that involve them. The critical approach to environmental conflicts is the adopted theoretical lens, through which the history of the industry's establishment will be observed, tracing the path to the discovery of the ground subsidence in five neighborhoods of Maceió, Alagoas. The intention is to compose the backdrop of the case and highlight the model of mineral exploitation operated by the company for forty years. The trajectory of the conflict arising from this exploitation will also be investigated, employing literature review, analysis of news reports, participant observation, and accounts from affected individuals located on the periphery of the area delimited by the Civil Defense - comprising those who still struggle to be recognized and who, in some way, keep alive the quest for justice. These accounts will be obtained through informal conversations and semi-structured interviews in residents' meetings, public hearings and consultations, as well as events held in the communities. The goal is to understand the process of resistance and its nuances, in order to identify the main challenges faced by these residents in maintaining their fight for the recognition of their rights.
