FAITHFUL TO TRADITION: Political culture and right-wing extremism in Maceió (2014-2023)
Extreme right. Maceió. Neoliberalism. Political Culture.
This present work aims to discuss the strengthening and consolidation of an extreme right political field in Brazil during the period from 2014 to 2023. We argue that the spaces for debate opened by social media in the 2010s and the intensification of political discourse triggered by the June 2013 protests enabled the spread of right-wing ideas and political practices in the country. This occurred due to the declining popularity of the Workers' Party government and corruption scandals involving the government's top echelon. We will use the conceptual framework provided by the category of political culture to understand the phenomenon and construct a narrative through content analysis of journalistic sources covering political news in the country during the studied period. Additionally, digital sources related to the activity on social media profiles of relevant groups and individuals in the political debate of the extreme right in Brazil, with a particular focus on the specificity of the capital city of Alagoas, will be utilized.
