SUMMARY:

The history of the present time marks the period of redemocratization in Brazil in the 1980s and how the evangelical church participated in this transitional phase. From a vast documentation of the annals of the National Congress, magazines and religious periodicals, Acts of Ecumenical Councils, deliberations of Church Conventions, among other records, we proceed to analyze how the evangelical church entered politics and marked its influence in the refoundation of the New Brazilian Republic. The evangelical church, as a new political actor, stood out as an influential phenomenon because it brought new strategies of action to make politics in Brazil – it directly introduced religion into the process and debates of the political space. Despite the evangelical diversity, the political demonstration was an attempt to create a participatory identity to make a religious conscience prevail over the public. The work is a discussion and analysis of these actions of religious, ethical, moralistic and physiological contours that confuse religious neutrality with the will to power of the religious; its nuances and consequences for Brazil and for the evangelical church itself.
