The Military Police Music Band of Alagoas: trajectories, memories and history in times of Dictatorship (1963-1972)
Musical band; Military police; Memoirs; trajectories
The state of Alagoas has a tradition of music bands dating back to the 19th century. This dissertation studies the Music Band of the Military Police of Alagoas with the objective of showing that, by joining the Band, the musicians who mostly migrated from the interior of the state of Alagoas to the capital Maceió, had the opportunity to rise socially. We justify this research by the need to know the factors that contributed for the Music Band of the Military Police of Alagoas to shelter, in its effective body, a large percentage of musicians from the interior of the state of Alagoas. At first, it addresses the history of this association, and then talks about its consolidation, through musical and political events within a time frame that goes from 1963 to 1965. We consulted several sources such as iconographic documents, interviews, administrative legislation and official records. In a second moment, it investigates the migratory movement of the musician within the state of Alagoas and his entry into the Music Band of the Military Police of Alagoas, through the biographical survey of three former components, taking into account the reasons why they decided to migrate to the capital of Alagoas and the social and political context at the time of their migrations. While the Band established itself in the music scene, it contributed, through the action of its members, to the cultural dissemination in the state, such as the formation of new associations and education, which resulted in relevant social action for society. Finally, it will investigate the celebrations of the Sesquicentennial of Independence in 1972 in Alagoas. How was its organization and the participation of the Music Band, in what was the apex moment for Civil-Military Dictatorship in Brazil.
