This paper discusses the vicissitudes involved in the translation of The Book of Mormon into Portuguese between 1930-40, as well as the immediate reception of the resulting volume, in a context that, besides the inter-religious polemics that had repercussions on the venture, was marked by authoritarian policies associated with the Estado Novo of Getúlio Vargas.
