A VISION OF EUCLIDE'S GEOMETRY UNDER BYRNE'S VIEW: A didactic sequence aimed at basic education
The elements. Oliver Byrne. Teaching of Maths. Didactic Sequence.
As a proposal of presentation and use of methodology in some maths basic content, this work is about a different methodology from the ones that the students are used to dealing at school. The methodology and practice that I present to you was designed through a didactic sequence for some students from Josefa Cavalcante Suruagy School, situated in Boca da Mata- AL, Brazil. It’s about Oliver Byrne’s way presented in the book “The Elements” written by Euclides. This methodology presents a different and inventive way from such book which is so important in maths area. Byrne presents the buildings and demonstrations using colors as red, blue, yellow and black. In this work, the students built an equilateral triangle and demonstrated the Pythagorean theorem using Byrne’s proposal for the book:” The Elements” written by Euclides. Furthermore, this work shows the results of what was built and students’ opinion about the methodology.
