PAGES: 134
BIG AREA: Ciências Exatas e da Terra
AREA: Química
SUMMARY:

In view of the work already carried out by the research group in the development of new materials and methodologies
for application in forensic chemistry aimed at developing latent fingerprints, this work seeks to integrate the group's
knowledge with a more in-depth study of the corrosion processes that occur on metallic surfaces electrodeposited
with conductive polymers. The electrochemical behavior of these materials will be investigated through the study of
corrosion potentials, Tafel curves and impedance measurements; considering lithium perchlorate electrolyte, different
types of sweat residues (ecrine or sebaceous) and variation in the aging time of the latent fingerprint. It is intended to
evaluate which media favor or disfavor corrosion processes and what is the relationship between the composition and
aging time of the fingerprint in these processes. The study of such behavior is related to the improvement of the
electropolymerization technique applied to the development of latent fingerprints. In this sense, from the
electrochemical tests and from the visual physical appearance of the surfaces, the existence of oxidation processes
occurring on the metallic surfaces was, so far, verified by changing the appearance of the samples due to the
formation of corrosion products, as evidenced by the displacements corrosion potentials, corrosion rates, resistance
to polarization, etc. It was also possible to observe the effect of fingerprint composition and aging time, which
influence the evolution of these processes very actively, due to the presence of inorganic salts, especially the chloride
ions present in these residues. These corrosion processes, more precisely those that occur on less resistant surfaces
such as copper and brass, do not occur uniformly on these surfaces; due to the difference in composition on the metal
surface in the region of the fingerprint ridges and valleys, enabling, in many cases, a considerable visualization of the
pattern of the latent fingerprint ridges.
