SUMMARY:

The implications brought about by the excessive consumption of fossil sources led to the efficient use of renewable
sources as an ideal alternative to meet the world's energy demand. Among them, biomass stands out, consisting
mainly of carbohydrates (55-85%), as it has advantages such as low cost, abundance and reduced greenhouse gas
emissions. Fructose, ketone monosaccharide, has been explored as a building block to obtain several chemical
intermediates with high added value, such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and levulinic acid. Catalysts play a key role in
carbohydrate conversion. Generally, homogeneous mineral acids are used, however they are unattractive for the
industrial sector because they present disadvantages such as corrosion in equipment, difficulty in separation and
reuse. Alternatively, efficient, cheap, selective and easily recoverable heterogeneous systems are preferred and are
being increasingly developed and applied, such as metal oxides. Therefore, in the present work, cerium oxide (CeO2),
molybdenum oxide (MoO3) and a mixed oxide (CeO2-MoO3) were synthesized using the modified pechini method for
further evaluation in the dehydration reaction of fructose. In order to elucidate the structural and textural properties,
the solids were characterized by X-ray diffraction (DRX), mid-infrared absorption spectroscopy (FTIR), infrared
absorption spectroscopy using pyridine as a molecule. probe (FTIR-pyridine) and N2 physisorption analysis (BET and
BJH). The reaction tests will be carried out at an optimized temperature of 150 ºC, in times from 0.5 to 6 h
