SUMMARY:

As a result of population growth, the need to produce food more efficiently with higher productivity per planted hectare has become a focus. For this, there was the development of various pesticides, in order to prevent and combat pests that harm the production of crops. But the indiscriminate use of these products causes damage to the environment, either by contaminating the soil and groundwater, or contaminating the food produced. With the intention of achieving sustainable agricultural production, where there is less use of this type of product or the total extinction of use, the need  for research to maintain productivity growth in the long term, without dependence on pesticides, has arisen. One of these lines of research was the isolation of pheromones from pests, fulfilling this need, since pest control is carried out without the need to apply toxic substances in plantations. But yes, in the form of a trap for the population control of these pests in an efficient and environmentally friendly way. In order to improve the implementation of this technique, when the dispersion continues, materials that are not aggressive to the environment have been developed, capable of retaining pheromones and releasing them in a controlled manner. Controlled release optimizes the amount of pheromone in the environment and reduces the cost of the technique, in addition to facilitating application. A disadvantage associated with pheromones are the residues of the synthesis steps that cannot be discarded in the medium due to their high toxicity, such as hexamethylphosdoramide (HMPA), the degradation method usually used is not effective, evidencing the need for fundamental of more efficient methods for its degradation. The present work has two welldefined ongoing goals, the production of materials capable of acting as controlled release agents for pheromones and the electrochemical treatment of the effluents generated during the synthesis of the pheromones used. The materials have been synthesized and release tests are already underway. During the sampling intervals, the electrochemical degradation methodology has been established, together with the follow-up analyzes of the reduction in the concentration of pollutants in the final effluent. Finally, the release materials will be characterized to understand the affinity with the studied pheromones and describe the properties of these materials. The release kinetics will be studied, together with the optimization of the amounts of adsorbent material and initial concentration of pheromone. In the treatment of the effluent, the best conditions of applied current and treatment time will be investigated, taking advantage of the high salinity of this type of effluent to promote an energetically favorable and environmentally friendly remediation.
