SUMMARY:

Yam (Dioscorea spp) is a tuber-producing vegetable of paramount socioeconomic importance, being a staple food for about 300 million people. Despite its excellent nutritional and energy quality, yam crops have been suffering from several structural and genetic problems. Either because of the involvement of pathologies, or because of the loss of quality of the cultivated genotypes. Therefore, this work aimed to (i) characterize and map the agrobiodiversity of creole yam varieties in Alagoas; (ii) evaluate the varieties for the presence of foliar pathologies; (iii) quantify the phenolic and flavonoid compounds present in the extracts of three varieties. The mapping and collection of accessions were carried out from October 2022 to March 2023 using the “snowball” sampling technique and identified using a botanical key. Accessions contained in the Embrapa germplasm collection, maintained at the Research Execution Unit in Rio Largo, Alagoas, were also used. For the evaluation of leaf blight and anthracnose, 15 leaves with symptoms of the disease were collected and evaluated under a microscope and the severity computed from the diagrammatic scale, ranging from 1 to 32% for leaf blight and 0 to 100% for anthracnose. The total phenol content and the quantity of flavonoids were obtained by evaluating the varieties common face, purple yam and white yam using the Folin-Ciocalteau reagent and Aluminum Chloride. Three yam species were identified in Alagoas farmers' gardens: Dioscorea alata, Dioscorea cayennensis and Dioscorea trifida, with D. alata having white and purple pulp varieties; D. trifida with pulp in white, yellow and purple colors and D. cayennensis with pulp variations in white and cream color. For the incidence of leaf disease and anthracnose, a high incidence of both diseases was identified in the studied accessions. Finally, the common yam genotype extract had the highest phenol content (1494.5 mg EAG/g) followed by the purple yam extract (1244.3 mg EAG/g) and white yam extract (677.7 mg EAG/g). The same pattern occurred in the amount of flavonoids where the common yam extract had the highest content (43.5 mg EQ/g) followed by the purple yam extract (23.2 mg EQ/g) and the white yam extract (18. 5 mg EQ/g). According to the results obtained, it was possible to conclude that three species of yam are cultivated in Alagoas, with more than 57% of farmers using only one variety. Regarding the behavior of the accessions in relation to the foliar diseases evaluated, they showed that there was an incidence in all, but approximately 65% of them showed less incidence than the others. This result shows the importance of the diversity of genetic material to guarantee the sustainability of the culture.
