SUMMARY:

The waste called sludge, generated in Water Treatment Stations (WTP) which mostly does not have a sustainable destination, when improperly disposed of in natura in water bodies causes alarming damage. The high levels of organic matter and the ability of the sludge to interact with species present in the environment suggest applications in technological and agricultural sectors. One of the major components of natural organic matter are humic substances (SH). Derived from the oxidation and polymerization of natural organic matter and presenting various functional groups in their structure, they play a fundamental role in the environment, being responsible for transporting and making nutrients available to plants, as well as complexing metals and organic compounds, which are potentially toxic to terrestrial life. and aquatic. In view of the above, this work aimed to extract and characterize the humic substances (SH) present in sludge samples from the Water Treatment Plant in the city of Penedo, which collects water from the São Francisco River and to evaluate the potential of SH in germination of Chloroleucon dumosum seeds, a species used in the recovery of degraded areas. The study used UV-vis spectroscopy techniques, infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), analyzes for fertility purposes, organic matter content and determination of metallic species content and seed germination. The UV-vis and FTIR spectroscopy results showed that the SH present in the sample had a considerable presence of aromatic groups and carboxylic groups, characterizing the presence of hydrophilic sites in the samples. Fertility and organic matter analyzes showed that this material has great potential for use in agricultural sectors. The determination of potentially toxic metals showed a high concentration of aluminum in the sludge and SH samples, which may be highly toxic to human health and the environment, and germination analyzes showed that the concentration of 100 mg/l of SH had a positive effect .
