Skin color interferes with obtaining higher incomes in the labor market in Alagoa?
Racial inequality; Alagoas labor market; income differences between races; racial discrimination.
This work aims to analyze the income inequalities between whites and blacks in the labor market of the Brazilian state of Alagoas for the period spanning from 2000 to 2018. This study is of fundamental importance for bringing evidence of racial discrimination in which blacks, representing the largest part of the population, even with greater difficulty in matching the educational level of white people, on average, cannot have a similar income. And how the historical context of a culture, which used to be enslaved, influences these results. It is a subject that still has been little explored, which makes this work even more relevant to the regional context. This research has a qualitative character and can be classified as descriptive and exploratory. It will carry out an extensive literature review, using data from (1) the Cadastro Geral de Empregados e Desempregados, from (2) Demographic Censuses and from (3) household sample surveys available at the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) database. Then, a historical series with descriptive statistics will be created out of the IBGE database. This research intends to qualify the debate on persistent income differences between races, through data related to employment, education and salary in Alagoas. It is expected to prove the existence of an intrinsic discrimination against the black population that limits economic development and equal opportunities between races in Alagoas.
