SUMMARY:

The expansion of Global Value Chains (GVC) has characterized the last few decades, modifying the dynamics of international trade relations. In this sense, new legal instruments have been developed within the scope of international relations, such as the Preferential Trade Agreements (APC), which have increasingly covered new sectors to be regulated, a phenomenon known as deep integration. This research project proposes to analyze the effects of the design of the APC on the profile of countries' participation in GVCs, observing whether these effects are similar for developed and developing countries. The literature on this relationship is small and there are no publications on the subject in Brazil. It is intended to collect data from 198 countries in the period from 1995 to 2020, breaking them down into 35 sectors. Then, an econometric analysis will be carried out using fixed effects estimators and the auto-regressive model with distributed lag (ARDL) adapted for a panel, the latter being something unprecedented in the literature. It is expected that the greater the degree of depth of an APC, the greater will be its stimulus to GVC expansion. However, it is expected that the APC will enable a greater participation in the GVCs only by developed countries. Carrying out this research will contribute to a nascent literature, participating in the dialogue in this domain and providing support for a more forceful view, with empirical support, on the effects of international agreements on the fragmentation of international production.
