SUMMARY:

Patients admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICU) have an increased risk of developing adverse events related to medications, this is due to the patients' clinical conditions and the constant change in pharmacotherapy. These errors can occur at different stages of the patient care process, from prescription to administration. The inclusion of clinical pharmacists in these intensive care units has an impact on improving patient outcomes, due to a significant reduction in medication errors. Although there are studies in the literature on the systematization of pharmaceutical services, as well as their impacts on patient care, in Brazil, there are still few publications in this context. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the impacts of clinical pharmacy services provided in Adult Intensive Care Units. A search and analysis of information was carried out using bibliographic means based on scientific articles. The databases selected were: Scielo, Cochrane, Scopus, LILACS, Pubmed, Web of Science, Embase and Medline. The search strategies to obtain information were using the following keywords: The search strategy was carried out by combining the main keywords: “drug related problem”, “medication related problem”, “adverse drug reaction”, “adverse drug event”, “drug therapy problem”, “medication errors” “intensive care unit”. After the analysis, 28 studies were selected, of which pharmaceutical services related to patient care (85%), management (14.3%) and continuing education for health professionals (4%) were evaluated. In total, 4,490 patients were involved and 10,438 pharmaceutical interventions were carried out. The most frequent types of errors were prescription errors involving dose adjustment, dilution management and identification of drug interactions. Of the studies that presented cost-benefit and education for professionals, the importance of the pharmacist in the unit was reported. Therefore, the different possibilities of action and interventions of the pharmacist contribute to reducing harm to the patient, rational use of medicines, thus ensuring safe care for patients.
